Sports Take: Time for the Cowboys to pay the man

After losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2018 divisional round, the Cowboys opened up their season 2-0 with wins over their division rivals, the New York Giants and Washington Redskins.

They could be on their way to the Super Bowl this season with the way they are playing, all while being led by the young but tenured quarterback Dak Prescott. The question on the minds of all Cowboys fans though is: How much do we pay the man?

Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagle’s quarterback, was signed to a four-year $128 million extension with $66 million in guarantees. Jared Goff, the Rams’ No. 1 draft choice in 2016, was signed to a four-year $134 million extension with a record breaking $110 million dollars in guarantees. With teams like the Eagles and Rams having already offered hefty extensions to their quarterbacks who were drafted in the same year as Prescott, the Cowboys need to offer a new contract to secure his talent.

Prescott led his team to two division titles in 2016 and 2018 and had a tremendous opening day against the Giants, recording four touchdowns with 405 yards and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. The young athlete got a lot of his team involved in the game as well, throwing touchdown passes to four different receivers including former Green Bay Packer Randall Cobb. Prescott also provided veteran tight end Jason Witten the opportunity to record a touchdown in his return to the National Football League. The Cowboys ultimately beat the Giants 35-17.

Dallas didn’t slow their pace down at all this past Sunday. The team went on the road to FedEx Field, home to the Washington Redskins and put on a show. Prescott shined tremendously once again, recording three touchdowns with 269 yards and a passer rating of 128.3. The quarterback now has seven touchdowns on the season and continues to emerge as a leader, allowing his offense to be involved in the game against Washington by connecting with three different receivers for touchdowns. The Cowboys shut the Redskins up in their house with a 31-21 win.

If Prescott, who has had three consecutive 3000+ yard seasons and two divisional titles, continues to play like this, then Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will have to consider paying his star QB a hefty amount if he wants him to remain in Jerry’s world.
