Baylor hosted the 15 Big 12 schools present at Capitol Hill over spring break by creating schedules, forming lobbying groups and holding group dinners. Not only did current Big 12 Institutions such as the University of Texas attend, but future Big 12 members such as the University of Houston and Brigham Young University were present as well.
Meeting with political stars and attending prestigious events may seem unlike the usual day of a college student, but these events are just a typical part of the itinerary for this Baylor Ambassadors.
Baylor seeks to establish a greater presence in Washington D.C. through a multiphase series of events.
“Our mission statement says that we educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service,” said Dr. Karla Leeper, vice president for board and executive affairs and chief compliance officer. “One of the most effective places to have impact as a leader or a servant-leader is in Washington, D.C.”
The Washington D.C. Internship Program, which provides students the opportunity to work with congressmen and women, is setting the stage for Baylor’s new vision, Pro Futuris.
Every year, Baylor’s dept of political science offers the Washington, D.C. Internship program to 10-15 students. Students are selected to work with representatives and committees in Congress, departments in the executive branch and other associations.

In December 2010, Congress passed the Post 9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvements Act of 2010, an amendment to the original GI Bill, which has been a source of financial aid for veterans attending college since 1944.
