The faces change, but the headlines stay the same for Baylor tennis. The men and women hoisted two Big 12 championship trophies last weekend as both teams ended the regular season as conference champions for the third consecutive year.
While most of the student body enjoyed the one-day vacation of Diadeloso, Baylor baseball had work to do. The Bears (14-22) outlasted Incarnate Word (11-24), 2-1 on Tuesday at Baylor Ballpark.
No. 14 Baylor softball picked up its first Big 12 series sweep of the season as it knocked off Texas Tech in three straight games over the weekend.
No. 13 Baylor softball kick off its Easter weekend with a bang as it hosts Big 12 opponent Texas Tech this weekend at Getterman Stadium. The Bears have learned to respect everybody over the course of non-conference play with impressive wins over then-No. 2 Oregon, then-No. 25 Tulsa and a conference opening series win over Oklahoma State.
No. 7 Baylor women’s tennis will travel to Lubbock for its third-straight conference road match on Saturday to face No. 18 Texas Tech.
After the final buzzer sounds at the Ferrell Center tonight, No. 14 Baylor men’s basketball seniors Kenny Chery and Royce O’Neale will walk off the court for the final time. The Bears’ final Big 12 matchup against Texas Tech at the Ferrell Center marks the final time fans will see both senior players sporting their Baylor jerseys.
Big 12 Roundup: This weekend in college football
After taking a loss in its first Big 12 Conference game to Texas, No. 12 Baylor softball traveled to Lubbock to play a three-game series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Bears handily recovered to sweep a hot Red Raider squad to move to 3-1 in conference play and to a hefty 27-6 on the season.
The No. 8 Baylor men’s tennis team fell to No. 10 Virginia 6-1 on Saturday. No. 18 women’s tennis had better luck, opening Big 12 Conference play with a 6-1 victory over No. 28 Texas Tech at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
For the last 8:05 of the Texas Tech game, Baylor basketball did not make a single field goal. The Bears missed five straight jumpers, all three-pointers, but somehow managed to hang on with a victory on Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
After an impressive night against Oklahoma State on Sunday, Mulkey said she likes the way the No. 7 Lady Bears (20-3, 10-1) rose in terms of confidence not just from her star players, but from her team as a whole in their past few games.
It was clear in the first few possessions that Texas Tech was going to be in an uphill battle against the No. 9 Lady Bears. Baylor handily defeated Texas Tech 92-43 at the Ferrell Center on Wednesday.
The Lady Bears (17-3, 7-1) started the half with poise, finding quality looks for senior guard Odyssey Sims, senior guard Makenzie Robertson and freshman forward Nina Davis throughout the half.
Coming off a big road victory against Oklahoma State, Baylor jumps back into conference play against Texas Tech at 7 p.m. today at the Ferrell Center.
Although Tech’s record (6-13, 0-8) may indicate it is an inferior team to Baylor (16-3, 6-1), the Lady Raiders are a team with grit and determination.
Baylor had lost only one game to a team in the state of Texas since the beginning of the 2011-12 basketball season. That dominance would came to an end after No. 12 Baylor (13-3, 1-2) lost on Wednesday night to the unranked Texas Tech Red Raiders (9-8, 1-3) in Lubbock by a score of 82-72.
Since the beginning of the 2011-12 season, Baylor has been the most dominant basketball power in the state of Texas. In that span, the Bears have posted a record of 19-1 against teams from the state of Texas. No. 12 Baylor (13-2, 1-1) will put it all on the line as they travel to Lubbock to play in-state conference rival Texas Tech (8-8, 0-3) on Wednesday night.
Coming off of a win for the first time in two weeks, Baylor volleyball looks to continue their success in a road match against in-state rival Texas Tech. Baylor currently sits at 10-13 overall, but only 2-5 in Big 12 play. Tech sits at last place in the conference with a record of 8-15 overall, and a paltry 1-6 record in conference.
No. 23 Baylor’s road to success will not be easy as it goes up against two Big 12 powerhouses beginning with a tough road test against Texas at 7 p.m. Friday before coming back home for a showdown against No. 15 Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
“When you get to conference every team is really good,” senior defender Selby Polley said. “In Texas they have a lot of height, so it will be a good challenge in the air for us. Sunday with Tech it’s just always a battle. They’re probably one of our rivals in conference and it’s always really competitive when we play against them.”
In an unusually cold evening, the No. 15 Baylor Lady Bears took care of business with an 8-2 win over Texas Tech on Thursday at Getterman Stadium. The chilly weather didn’t seem to faze the Lady Bears who came out of the dugout with energy.
The Lady Bears scored in four of the six innings of play with everyone in the starting lineup having at least one hit, with the exception of junior left-handed pitcher Whitney Canion. However, Canion made up for it through her solid pitching.
The Lady Bears stayed on top of the Big 12 after beating Texas Tech 89-47 last night.
Though the ultimate result was the same as when they last battled the Lady Raiders, the statistics were noticeably different.
Baylor football clinched a historic third consecutive bowl bid this season by defeating Texas Tech in overtime 52-45 on Saturday.
The Bears are on a hot streak with three wins in the past four games. When it counts the most, Baylor is playing its best football late in the season.
In November and December of the past two seasons, Baylor is nearly perfect with a 9-1 record.
The Baylor volleyball team earned its first Big 12 Conference win on Wednesday night against Texas Tech. After facing four consecutive ranked opponents and starting the season 0-4 in conference, the Bears showed resiliency and earned a victory against Texas Tech at the Ferrell Center.
The No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears could be the first team ever to win 40 games in a single season.
The Big 12 is on the national television stage once again as No. 22 Baylor battles No. 5 Oklahoma at 7 p.m. on ABC in Waco. Other things at stake for conference teams include bowl eligibility and national title game aspirations.
