“I would posit that most people experience positive improvements in their mental health when there is a break from school or work,” Owusu-Ankomah said. “This can particularly be the case if the person is intentional about practicing positive self-care — such as engaging in mindfulness or connecting with others — throughout the break.”

Don’t Cancel That Class! is a program led by Baylor Wellness that offers an option for faculty who are unable to teach their classes on a certain day. A member of the Department of Wellness is invited to provide students an interactive and informational presentation about a wellness topic of their choice.
Themed runs such as paint runs are a growing trend. On Halloween night, the Baylor community will have the opportunity to participate in a glow-in-the-dark paint run sponsored by the Fitness and Wellness departments.
“We wanted to come up with a fun way to promote fun and fitness to our students with various activities,” said Van Davis, assistant director of fitness.
Fresh on the job, Megan Patterson, a Baylor alumna with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in public health, is the new director for the department of wellness at Baylor University.
Patterson said this department, which has fewer than three full-time employees, does big things for Baylor students.
“We want to promote the mind, body and soul of Baylor students and we do that mainly through programming,” Patterson said.
The Sexual Assault Work Team and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. held a presentation in Kayser Auditorium Wednesday night to warn students about abuse and sexual assault. Natashia Doolittle, a representative from the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children, spoke about the necessity of open discussion, citing the statistic that one in four women and one in 33 men will be sexually assaulted during their college years.
Students and faculty will have an opportunity to discuss unhealthy relationships, sexual assault and other issues at a forum at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Kayser Auditorium.
A common belief is that when students start college, they gain weight from the university lifestyle. In truth, this idea might actually be contributing to eating disorders across campus.
Students in need of relaxation can partake in a virtual vacation hosted by Baylor Counseling Center and the Department of Wellness. Along with free food, the event will feature tips on how to stay relaxed during finals and will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and Wednesday in the Bill Daniel Student Center Den.
As flowers blossom and the leaves on trees grow fuller and brighter with the rising temperatures, the season begins its transition to springtime.
In a life full of activities, obligations and responsibilities, most college students put sleep at the bottom of the priorities list. Lori Genous, director for Baylor’s department of wellness, encourages students to value their time to sleep.
Sticking to New Year’s resolutions is difficult for almost everyone, especially when the goal is to be healthier. Life gets in the way, old habits creep back and resolutions go unfulfilled. But there is hope.
