Baylor Men’s Tennis participated in the first round of the NCAA singles tournament yesterday. Through two hard-fought matches, sophomore Devin Badenhorst advanced to the next round against NC state’s Martin Borisiouk 6-4, 7 (9) -6 (7), and senior Oskar Brostrom Poulsen fell to Princeton’s junior Fnu Nidunjianzan 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Since hiring Spavital this offseason (and moving redshirt junior quarterback Sawyer Robertson into the starting lineup), Baylor’s offense has sped light years ahead of where it was a year ago. Jeff Grimes’ wide zone offense finished No. 101 nationally at 23.1 points per game. In less than a full season on the job, Spavital has the Bears up to No. 23 nationally and second in the Big 12 at 35.1 points per game.
The Bears have scored over 100 points in consecutive games for the first time in the Scott Drew era.
The Bears (3-1) honed in on the defensive side of the ball, where junior forward Bella Fontleroy had a career-high five blocks. Head coach Nicki Collen’s team finished with 23 points off turnovers after forcing 11 steals and swatting away nine shots.

Even the bye week can’t stop redshirt freshman running back Bryson Washington from rewriting the Baylor record books. Washington scored four touchdowns for the second game in a row as the green and gold won their first-ever game in Morgantown, 49-35, and clinched bowl eligibility against West Virginia on Saturday night.
Baylor football head coach Dave Aranda is one win away from bouncing back from a 3-9 season in 2023 and securing bowl eligibility in 2024. The Bears (5-4, 3-3 Big 12) are on a three-game winning streak and will look to win their first game on the road against West Virginia in program history at 3 p.m. Saturday at Milan-Puskar Stadium in Morgantown.
It’s one thing to be a part of Baylor football history, but it’s another to witness it for nearly three decades. For 301 consecutive Baylor football games, there has been one constant reporting from the sideline. Through blazing Texas heat and pouring rain, sideline radio analyst Ricky Thompson has been there for it all.
Cross County and Track & Field
Baylor track and field freshman pole vaulter Molly Haywood may be hitting new heights in her event, but her love for the sport spurred from her competitions in American Ninja Warrior Junior as a 10-year-old.
“I thought overall, our kids competed really well, considering, because it could be like this at Big 12s, it could be like this especially at nationals, in Oregon,” Ford said. “It could be this kind of weather. But I thought overall, our kids did well.”
Baylor track and field is gearing up to host the Michael Johnson Invitational this weekend. With 22 schools in the home meet, the Bears are using it as an opportunity to prepare for championship season, according to head coach Michael Ford.
Volleyball
No. 17 Baylor volleyball knocked off Kansas State in straight sets on Wednesday night 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18, extending the Bears’ win streak to eight, as well as marking their fourth sweep in a row.
No. 17 Baylor volleyball has a roster filled with talent, and senior outside hitter Elise McGhee is no exception. In Saturday’s sweep against UCF, McGhee reached 1,000 career kills, a feat that few can boast.
The Bears (17-6, 9-3 Big 12) went 3-0 over the Knights (8-13, 1-11 Big 12). Despite only playing three sets, it was just enough time for senior libero Lauren Briseño and senior outside hitter Elise McGhee to reach individual milestones.
Tennis
Amidst the pressure in a tournament that includes some of the best in Texas, Baylor finds itself with a chance at glory.

In the heat of high-level competition, Baylor men’s tennis is already seeing the fruits of its labor pay off. After six days of prequalifying and qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships, the green and gold battled two doubles duos into the quarterfinals of the main draw on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Led by junior midfielder Skye Leach, with one goal, Baylor soccer ended their season on a high note, with a 1-1 tie against Iowa State securing their spot in the 2024 Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship.
Baylor soccer is gearing up for its final regular season match against Iowa State with a spot in the Big 12 Soccer Championship on the line. Kickoff against the Cyclones is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames.

Missi was tabbed as the 22nd overall pick in ESPN’s Mock Draft on April 17, while Walter was projected in the lottery at No. 12. Fraschilla said they’re both “prototype NBA players once they physically mature in the next two, three, four [or] five years.”
In the 2023 season, Major League Baseball officials added the pitch clock to aid the speed of the game. After the season and now into 2024, I’ve seen that the pitch clock has been very useful and has accelerated the pace of the game.
Hot Seat
Baylor men’s basketball might just have the most fascinating opening-season stretch of any team in the country. After getting walloped by No. 6 Gonzaga in the dead of night, the No. 12-ranked Bears (2-1) silenced No. 16 Arkansas in Dallas and took care of business against Sam Houston in the season home opener, 104-67.
