By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterBaylor’s upcoming “If You’re Breathing, You’re Biased” lecture will tackle the issue of unconscious bias, and how that can affect decisions made in various communities we may belong to, like classrooms and the workplace. By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterWe’ve all been there — you parked late at night, didn’t get a very close space, and likely spent some time searching for your car the next time you needed to go off campus. Or, maybe you commute and park at the Ferrell Center to take a shuttle over to campus. The shuttle may have left a few minutes early and you missed it, or maybe it came after its scheduled arrival and you had to walk into class late. Many Baylor students feel this struggle regardless of their living situation, as no parking option is…

By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterBaylor’s new HelpDesk+ is now open in the garden level of Moody Memorial Library to assist students with technology help and providing services and information. There were also physical on-campus options, such as ITS and a desk called Tech Point, but the services were spread out over different locations, and employees often had to refer students to other offices. This new HelpDesk+ “combines the resources of the phone-based ITS Help Desk with hardware repair, AirBear answers, audiovisual technology and laptop checkouts and creative…
By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterBaylor’s web page about the College of Arts and Sciences’ new unified core curriculum was recently updated online with information about new core requirements. On Sept. 4, College of Arts and Sciences students received an email containing a link to the page, which is now complete with course lists and FAQ’s. The significance of designating this core as ‘unified’ is that all four degrees (B.A., B.F.A., B.S. and B.S.A.S.) now follow the same core curriculum. “Now, we’re able to say that there are particular skills and knowledge that’s shared and that says that when you…
By Meredith Howard | Staff Writer A new addition was recently added to the Bill Daniel Student Center (SUB)— as of yesterday, an Amazon Hub Locker is operational for students to pick up their online packages. By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterMany students know they have the ability to start a club at Baylor based on their interests, but the process of chartering these organizations may not be as obvious. Baylor outlines that students should begin with five basic steps when wanting to begin their own club. The first task is to meet with the Department of Student Activities and for the applicant to review Student Activities policies.Clubs must have at least one full-time faculty or staff member acting as their adviser. The next step is to complete and submit a charter application. The fall priority…

By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterBaylor students have mixed reactions to the news that Baylor University Police Department (BUPD) will no longer offer nighttime campus escorts. “The escort program is no longer in play,” Mark Childers, associate vice president of Baylor’s Department of Public Safety, said. BUPD has offered personal escorts in some form for over seven years, allowing students to call the station, state their location and be picked up as soon as an officer can arrive. Brownsville sophomore Sophia Garza utilized BUPD’s escort service and expressed feeling unsafe upon hearing about the termination of the program. “I don’t…

By Meredith Howard | Staff Writer Baylor has many well-regarded traditions, but not all of them are as old as Homecoming. Baylor freshmen had the opportunity to leave their mark on the literal ‘Baylor Line’ by signing it for the first time in 2018 on the Friday before the first football game of the season. This year’s freshmen and senior classes had the same opportunity Thursday at McLane Plaza through Baylor Kickoff Weekend. Athens senior True Head, the Baylor Kickoff Weekend chair, is organizing the event with Baylor Chamber of Commerce. Head said he hopes for the event to be…
By Meredith Howard | Staff WriterEmployers love to see internships on applications, but many job-seekers don’t have time to dedicate to unpaid work.I had the means to quit my part-time job to pursue an internship this summer, and I really enjoyed it. However, not everyone has the opportunity to have the same experience.I was actually offered paid freelance work when I finished my internship with a business journal in my hometown, but I likely wouldn’t have gotten an offer to get paid if I hadn’t completed the internship. The problem with this system is that unpaid internships are only available to…

By Meredith Howard | Staff Writer Every August, student and faculty volunteers at Baylor welcome over 3,000 freshmen by moving their belongings into their dorm rooms. This tradition, now known as Move 2 BU, has only officially existed since 2004. Before Move 2 BU was an official event, students had help moving in but didn’t have their cars unloaded for them like they currently do. Kim Scott, interim associate vice president of student life, has been the move-in project coordinator for all 15 years that Baylor has held Move 2 BU. Scott attended Baylor in the 1980s and her move-in…
By Meredith Howard | Staff Writer Two Texas laws regarding sexual assault on college campuses will take effect in September—House Bill 1735 and Senate Bill 212. House Bill 1735 requires a college to provide a policy to its student body and faculty about sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking and dating violence.
