By David Garza | ReporterThe sound of bells at Baylor is a campus staple, clanging every day on the hour for the community to hear. These bells are known as the carillon. The carillon, located in Pat Neff’s tower, is composed of 48 bells, classifying it as a concert-sized carillon. The lower 28 bells have the Baylor seal, a frieze and inscriptions. The inscriptions can be found on a plaque in the foyer of Pat Neff Hall. Every president of Baylor through Dr. Herbert Reynolds has a quote on one of the bells. The clappers on the lower eight bells…

By David Garza | Reporter The Baylor University Golden Wave Marching Band has performed a variety of shows during football game halftimes throughout the semester – its performances including the Boy Band show, the Queen show and its tribute to the Baylor women’s basketball team. During the boy band show, the band performed popular music from One Direction, the Jonas Brothers and the Backstreet Boys. By David Garza | ReporterNaps. Everybody takes them, but should we? Do everything you can to get enough sleep throughout the night so that you can avoid long naps throughout the day. Naps should not last longer than 30 minutes. Power naps, typically 15 to 20 minutes, can help you feel re-energized. But if the nap lasts longer than 30 minutes, you run the risk of going into deep sleep. Deep sleep, the fourth stage of sleep in a 90-minute sleep cycle, is the reason why you wake up feeling groggy and disoriented after a long nap. Not only should…
By David Garza | Reporter Self-arranging dust particles may lead to a future with “self-assembling” phones. Dr. Truell Hyde, a Baylor physics professor and director of the Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research (CASPER), is currently conducting research on dusty plasmas to gain greater insight. Hyde said that dust arose as a problem in the etching of motherboards for electronics, which are etched by plasma beams. A motherboard is the main circuit board in an electronic that allows for communication between other components of the electrical system. “Whenever you etched something, a piece of dust came off the…
By David Garza | ReporterNot every incoming student has the opportunity to begin taking classes for their major, or get hands-on experience in their field, during their first week of class at Baylor. That is not the case for aviation sciences majors, who spend their first week spending time in the air learning to fly an airplane with an instructor. Dallas junior Vanessa Vargas is an aviation sciences major who has been flying planes since her freshman year. “I wanted to be a pilot since middle school,” Vargas said, “I was just this crazy, outgoing girl who told everyone, ‘I’m…
By David Garza | ReporterGreen-colored water does not only contain algae—it can also contain deadly toxins. The cause for these toxins and their long-term effects on atmospheric climate change are what the Biological Systems Research class is attempting to uncover. Dr. Jacquelyn Duke and Dr. Thad Scott co-teach the Biological Systems Research class, BIO 3300 and BV90, a research-centered class that lasts the entire academic year and is limited to just 12 biology majors per year. The class is meant to provide students with experience in research and “how to communicate [the research],” Duke said. The class is funded by…
By David Garza | ReporterImagine having to sort through and organize stacked boxes of Lego bricks that stand higher than an 8-year-old boy, with each box containing over 4,000 elements. That’s exactly the undertaking that Baylor philosophy professor Dr. Pete Younger, his wife Rachael Younger and their two boys must undergo in order to continue their business of selling Lego products. Around June 29, the Younger family finished a seven-month project in which they sorted and organized 108,000 Lego elements that they list and sell on their website. Younger first began to sell Lego elements in 2014 while he was…
