Carson Lewis | Page One Editor Visitors of the Waco Dr Pepper Museum Wednesday night had the chance to learn more about the museum’s past, including reports from the destructive 1953 Waco tornado and documentation of alleged paranormal activity in various locations in the historic building. As part of the event, named “After Dark,” guests were given a two-hour-long tour of the historic Artesian Manufacturing & Bottling Co. building. Much of the interior lighting which normally lit the buildings interior was turned off, and visitors were instead expected to bring flashlights to light the path for their guided tour. However,…

By Carson Lewis | Page One Editor“The Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” an exhibit housing artwork accompanied by student research, is open to the public in the Martin Museum of Art once more after originally being shown in fall 2017. “This is only the second time it has ever been shown. We showed it initially in 2017 at the end of the semester. We had a symposium for [the students] to present their original findings, and we decided to rehang the exhibition now because we like it,” museum director Allison Chew said. After opening on Tuesday, the exhibit will stay available…

By Carson Lewis | Page One EditorHistory surrounds us. The events of the past have weight on the way we do things today and affect the tensions and strains on the communities we exist within. If the horrors of our past can go unrecognized, as some of them did at their occurrence, then we will have a narrow and dangerous view of the world we inhabit.I used to think about the start of May as the beginning of my birthday month. When I was little, it signaled the closing days of school and the beginning of summer. In high school,…
By Carson Lewis | Page One Editor Active Minds, a mental health awareness organization, set out 100 LED lights on Fountain Mall Monday evening, each representing 10 of the approximately 1,000 college students who take their own lives yearly. Active Minds, a national organization, has a chapter on Baylor’s campus tailored to the specific needs of the campus community. The Baylor community experienced the pain of suicide last March when a senior electrical and computer engineering major took his own life. The student was previously involved in advocacy for suicide awareness before his death, after his sister committed suicide in…

By Carson Lewis | Page One Editor Imagine being in front of an auditorium filled with people: standing-room only. There is no script, and no director, but the performance is about to start. All eyes are directed toward the stage, and no one in the room, not even the actors, fully understand what will be presented in the next hour. A terrifying nightmare come true for some, the students in Guerrilla Troupe, an Improvisation comedy group, see the situation as electrifying. In fact, the group will be in that exact environment this weekend: at 10 p.m. Friday, and at 8…
By Carson Lewis | Page One EditorWith heavy construction ongoing with I-35, now is as good a time as any for Baylor to improve the safety of its sidewalks and roads for those who walk, skate and bike to class and work. During high school when I was looking at universities to attend, I noticed that most campuses emphasized safety for students. On Baylor’s campus, the emergency yellow poles are a great example of this. However, safety can appear in different forms and might be less obvious. When visiting the other colleges, I remember being amazed by the quality of…
By Carson Lewis | Page One Editor The group is composed of Baylor students, has a president and officer positions and meets weekly for group activities. It functions in the same way as many Baylor clubs with activities like discussions and bowling nights. But this group of students can’t claim to have what other organizations have: an official charter from the university. That’s what they want to change. Gamma Alpha Upsilon (ΓAY), an unofficial LGBTQ group on campus, is looking to the new semester with hopes of becoming an official chartered organization. Formerly known as SIF (Sexual Identity Forum), Gamma…
