The past several hours have seen several stalled vehicles and collisions as drivers face the sudden downpour.
Waco Police Department spokesman Sgt. Patrick Swanton said several officers and wreckers were working early this morning to rescue drivers stuck under the freeway near University Parks Drive and Interstate 35.
“Police officers rescued three people from their vehicles but there were no injuries,” Swanton said. “Right now the rain has let up and we’re okay but it looks like more rain will come and we’re asking drivers to use extreme caution.”
Swanton said as more rain follows during the day the significant runoff will lead to more flooding in the streets. Swanton said drivers are encouraged to avoid driving if possible and should not try to cross large sections of water as the water intake causes vehicles to stall.
Traffic lights at LaSalle Avenue and Jack Kultgen Expressway that intersect with University Parks Drive are currently flashing red as a result of power outages and drivers are approaching the those areas as four-way stops.
A flash flood warning for the Baylor campus area went into effect at 9:43 a.m. and ended at 12:45 p.m.
