Baylor’s 1909 celebration was likely the first collegiate homecoming event in the United States a distinction that has earned Baylor a spot in an upcoming Smithsonian exhibit.
The exhibit, called “Hometown Teams,” is part of a series of traveling exhibits called “Museum on Main Street,” which will tour small towns across the U.S. from 2014 – 2021.
Baylor director of photography Robbie Rogers said the Smithsonian initially approached Baylor Marketing and Communications over the summer because of a picture of Baylor Homecoming that was posted online.
The picture, taken by assistant director of photography Matthew Minard, features Baylor’s annual homecoming parade, which is also the largest homecoming parade in the nation, with downtown Waco in the background.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to share not only our work, but also the life of being here at Baylor,” Rogers said.
Rogers said Baylor homecoming is like a small-town event because people come to see family, friends and places, and the exhibit provides a way to share Baylor homecoming with future generations.
