Milkshakes are an institution, among the words that are synonymous with the very fabric of our country, like “freedom.”

As a proud preacher of the superiority of this sweet treat, I come to spread the milkshake gospel by ranking my top five Waco milkshake choices.

    1. Andy’s Frozen Custard: Strawberry Oreo Cheesecake Shake

My number one goes to Andy’s. The smooth pull of the rich custard, followed by a tasty gamble of either crisp or juicy strawberries, the soft crunch of Oreo cookie along with the pleasant chewiness of cake is a delight on the senses like no other.

Located across the highway in the depths of the Grease Pit, this shake is convenient and delicious, albeit slightly expensive. There are many experiences that I’ll forever remember and hold dear to me during my time at Baylor. Late night Andy’s with friends will be one of them, in addition to this milkshake. Truly, nothing can compare.

Do yourself a favor, and go get a shake after this. Bring some friends, sit beneath the neon lights, laugh and make some memories. Your week will be made.

    2. Waco Waffle: Chocolate Waffle Milkshake

The chocolate milkshake comes with a beautifully blended mix of chocolate and vanilla ice cream. It’s rich, tasty and delightfully smooth. The addition of waffle bits and graham crackers make the thing a feast, despite its high price.

It’s a little further into Waco, but if you’re willing to drive, it is well worth the wait.

    3. Sonic: Strawberry Milkshake

The working man’s milkshake. It’s a salt of the earth, reliable, get it done type of treat. It’s cheap, flavorful and just tasty enough to fulfill the craving while still leaving a little more to be desired.

The ice cream mixture can be pretty hard to slurp up at first and doesn’t have the well blended ingredients or chewy additions that the other shakes have.

The whipped cream and cherry on top add a lovely layer of flavor that sells it. What it lacks in uniqueness, it makes up for in attractiveness to the wallet and the classic appeal of the drive in.

    4. Cold Stone Creamery: Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Dream

Prepare yourself with this one folks — this thing is a monster. It’s smooth, supple flavors will whisk you away into an overly sweet sense of security. A single shake will be 1200 calories just by itself.

Is it delicious? Yes. Peanut buttery and filled with chocolate flavor? Yes. Too heavy to enjoy casually? Also yes.

If you want to have a milkshake with a side of guilt, this the place to go.

    5. Braum’s: Pecan Praline and Oreo Bits Milkshake

Braum’s is a delight in many ways. The richness of the pecans and praline made for a deliciously soft flavor by itself, and complimented by the crunchy Oreo bits makes for a wonderful combination of flavors that I find unique to Braum’s.

However, the shakes are really quite simple. No whipped cream or cherry is sacrilege to the milkshake name. In addition, it is a near thirty minute drive from Waco. While delicious, the drive is truly the let down in this milkshake equation.

If you’re not a fan of this recommendation, try the thirty other flavors Braum’s offers.
