There are certain “cult classic” movies everyone watches. Yet there are movies that hardly get the same spotlight, despite being just as good. These movies stand out and make an impression despite not having a huge fanbase.
For Sanger freshman Wilson, that movie is “The Darjeeling Limited,” directed by Wes Anderson.
“’The Darjeeling Limited’ approaches a family relationship in such a different way,” Wilson said.
“The Darjeeling Limited” tells the story of three brothers who travel across India after their father dies in attempt to bond with each other.
“The three brothers in it are clearly disconnected, stubborn, and not well acquainted with one another, but Wes Anderson still strongly shows the deep connection of brotherhood amongst the three,” Wilson said. “I also love this movie because of the unexpected humor within it.”
San Antonio freshman Sophie Stevenson thinks “It Takes Two,” directed by Andy Tennant, should get more praise.
“I think all around it’s a fun film,” Stevenson said. “It’s a similar concept to ‘The Parent Trap,’ but different enough from it so that it has its own interesting originality. I would also say it’s just very funny and quotable.”
“It Takes Two” tells the story of two girls who look identical who meet one day. It uses the same story elements of “The Parent Trap,” but focuses more on the romantic subplot of the parents.
For some, a hidden gem movie is defined by its aesthetics. Boerne freshman Kenlee Runyan thinks “Jersey Boys,” directed by Clint Eastwood, captures the vibes of the 60s very well.
“I love the soundtrack, and I love the overall vibe of the 60s time setting,” Runyan said.
“Jersey Boys” tells the origin story of the band The Four Seasons, focusing on how the four members came together to start playing music.
When considering what makes a movie a hidden gem, Stevenson believes it’s the ratio of quality to hype.
“It depends on how underappreciated or how under-talked about a movie is, even though the movie has incredible quality, story or creativity,” Stevenson said.
Wilson believes that a movie is a hidden gem when it’s unpopular, but a film can also be a hidden gem because it’s misunderstood.
“I think a hidden gem movie is obviously a movie that is lesser known and deserves more recognition, but can also be a movie that might be popular but isn’t popular for the true meaning of the movie,” Wilson said.
