Athletes rely heavily on the student section’s energy in their performance. When they see their peers, friends and family in the stands cheering them on, there is a united front for the love and passion of the game.
The energy and noise of fans is felt on the field as players look out at the people attending their games to witness them win. It gives them a sense of drive and excitement to play with more purpose in a positive atmosphere.
Fan engagement ties to home field advantage. Having a crowd of fans from the athletes’ school does not just affect their performance. The opponents get affected by how loud and distracting fans are, which throws off their focus.
Baylor University’s Baylor Line is a unique tradition that “represents the commitment of the entire Baylor Nation to support and cheer on our Bears.” After a big play, the Bears are able to build off the excitement from the student section. The opposing team, however, deals with the consequences of a disorienting, heckling student section strategically placed behind the their bench.
President Linda Livingstone spoke on Baylor Athletics being the “front porch” of the university in an interview with Baylor Connections. She commented on how Baylor’s athletic programs bring friends, families and students together to cheer on the Bears at a national level.
“It’s certainly about the quality of the product on the field or the court, but it’s also about all the wraparounds that you bring to help people understand how fun it is to be there,” Livingstone said.
Athletes and coaches are aware of a student section’s impact, whether they are playing at a home or away game. In a press conference before Baylor Football went up against Auburn Tigers, Head Coach Dave Aranda said he recognized how playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, would look different for his players.
“The environment’s going to be different and I think the noise is probably gonna be louder than what they’re used to in the spring or in the fall,” Aranda said. “And so it’s gonna be keeping all that out and focused on their process and what they gotta do.”
Baylor ended up losing against Auburn 16-17 on Sept. 5, 2026. They had an outstanding game, yet made some technical errors and fell under pressure.
The scoreboard is not the only personal connection to our players. It is the fans that show up and stay for the duration of the game to see their team succeed. The score informs the players how they should play, but the cheering in the stands fuel the athletes’ fire to not give up.
