The Baylor Equestrian team set a program point record by beating West Texas A&M 18-2 for their first and only home meet this semester.
Baylor swept West Texas A&M in the first three rounds of fences, horsemanship and flat riding.
“We’re taking it one step at a time. We’ve got to get a few more notches under our belt, but we just got to keep going strong,” said junior Shannon Hogue, who was awarded outstanding performer honors in fences.
There are a lot of freshmen on the team, but also a lot of returning members who won the Big 12 Championship and were the number 1 seed going into last year’s National Championship.
“Everyone is doing amazing, so hopefully we can take this momentum on the road,” Hogue said.
The team is adjusting seamlessly to all of the changes this season, including a new head coach.
“They have been open minded. They are excited for the change and excited for the opportunity to have some input on some of the changes we are making,” said Casie Maxwell, Baylor Equestrian head coach.
Team members also echo this sentiment.
“There have been a few curve balls, but the team is so game,” Hogue said. “Everyone wants to win, everyone wants to be here — that we kind of just come together and power through whatever is going on.”
Direction and progress will be key in order to make headway this season, according to Maxwell.
“It is a really talented group. I think they just need more direction on how to put that into play to make us get to our end goals,” Maxwell said.
Baylor will open their Big XII play against Oklahoma State on October 7 in Stillwater, Okla.
