AUSTIN — Baylor leads rival University of Texas 7-0 at the half thanks to a blocked kick that was returned by Baylor into the touchdown.
The lone touchdown came from a field goal block on a 52-yard attempt for Texas. Junior defensive lineman Beau Blackshear blocked Nick Rose’s low kick and junior safety Terrell Burt returned it for 62 yards into the end zone.
Starting from the 1-yard line on the other end of the field, UT quarterback Tyrone Swoopes drove the Longhorns to the other 1-yard line. That Texas drive chewed up a lot of clock time in the second quarter, but with 30 seconds to go in the half and the ball just outside of the end zone, Swoopes fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Blackshear.
The Longhorns were expected to tie the score on that quarterback keep, but Baylor held strong and kept their 7-point lead into the half.
Leading the nation in yards per game and points per game, the Bears could not establish their offense well in the first half. It was the first time in the 2014 season the Bears were held to only one touchdown in a half. Petty went 4-11 on passing, totalling 43 passing yards in the first half. Baylor running backs Shock Linwood and Johnny Jefferson accumulated 79 yards for the Bears on 17 total carries.
Swoopes was not much more successful than Petty, throwing 9-17 and one interception. UT ran the ball 22 times and totalled 111 yards. Overall Texas edged Baylor 190-129 in total yards in the first half.
