The Big 12’s newest sport is women’s lacrosse, slated to start in 2025. Baylor has yet to join but has an interested club team — though it’s not the one you’d think.
It was the second full week of Big 12 sports, as Baylor played host to the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge and traveled on the road with other teams. But since it’s the heat of football season, here’s everything else you may have missed in Baylor Athletics over the weekend.
The Bears fell one hit short of a reverse sweep.
Baylor lost to the Utes in Salt Lake City, 23-12, but began to shake off the frost built up over the past two seasons.
After allowing 17 points and 151 total yards in the first quarter, the Bears (1-1) held the Utes (2-0) without another offensive touchdown and just 141 total yards for the rest of the game. Rising, a seventh-year college quarterback, was taken out of the game with 1:47 left in the second quarter after colliding with Gatorade coolers on the sidelines. Without Rising in the game, Utah only recorded 99 yards of offense.
The green and gold toppled the Golden Gophers in a thrilling fifth-set upset Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
Despite trailing at halftime, Baylor soccer managed to bring it back and take down SMU 2-1 Thursday night in Dallas at Washburne Stadium, thanks to another game-winning goal from junior forward Tyler Isgrig.
The jitters are gone for Baylor football after sprinting into the season with a dominant victory. Lingering around the corner, though, is a road test against No. 11 Utah, which offers the Bears a chance to storm back into the national limelight. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Men's Basketball
Bears are ready for their first round matchup with UCSB on Friday to kick off their post-season.
With the final full season at the Ferrell Center a thing of the past, all eyes are on the soon to be finished Paul and Alejandra Foster Pavilion.
Big 12 basketball produced a nation-high percentage of teams on both the men’s and the women’s side in 2022-23.
Women's Basketball
Despite the weather, 698 students filled the Bear Pit for the second-highest student turnout in program history as No. 9 Baylor women’s basketball bounced back with a major 75-63 win over No. 13 University of Texas, Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
No. 9 Baylor women’s basketball was outscored 8-1 in the last 2 minutes and 30 seconds, giving up a six-point lead to lose in heartbreaking fashion to No. 18 University of Oklahoma, 78-77, Wednesday night in the Ferrell Center.
There were plenty of ups and downs for Baylor Athletics over the past weekend.
Equestrian
Baylor, along with two other schools, united the movement to rename the sport formerly known as competitive cheer. Acrobatics and tumbling is currently supported by six inaugural members in its bid for recognition by the NCAA as an emerging sport.

Baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, track and field and equestrian all competed over the weekend.
Tennis
The 15th-ranked men’s team (4-0) and 23rd-ranked women’s team (3-0) have already kicked off strong this spring with sweeps against Lamar and SMU on the men’s side and sweeps against Prairie View A&M and Rice on the women’s side.
Baylor men’s and women’s tennis teams remained undefeated in the early season, grabbing sweeps against SMU and Rice Monday.
The Bears hope to build a foundation toward a championship run when they close the fall season at the Big 6 tournament in North Richland Hills.

In the 2023 season, Major League Baseball officials added the pitch clock to aid the speed of the game. After the season and now into 2024, I’ve seen that the pitch clock has been very useful and has accelerated the pace of the game.
