Every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., college students and people of Waco head to Freight Waco for their night of trivia, ready to sit down and prepare for their shot at first place.
What started as a weekly game has now become a community event. Whether it’s Baylor students looking for something calm and fun to do in the middle of the week or Waco residents trying to test their knowledge, trivia night always draws a crowd that is excited for the event.
General manager Amber Davis said a normal trivia night is action-packed.
“Everybody gets here right about 7:30 … we do a little countdown on the big screen,” Davis said. “After every round we do a big five-minute countdown to let everyone get food and drinks in between rounds. We do like five or six rounds, 15 questions or so each. They get significantly more difficult as you go through the questions. There are some fill-in-the-blank.”
There is a lot going on in the normal rounds of the game. This gets people excited, and the top teams start to think they have won. But the final rounds are the most anticipated.
“At the end, the last round is always a music round,” Davis said. “So we play music, and you have to guess either the lyrics or the band or song name. Then there is a final question, which determines the overall winner. We’ll flash the winners up on there, a really cool slideshow flashing everyone up there that won.”
The winners get to go up and claim their prize, which changes every week. Previous weeks have included food and drink tokens, promo items that vendors bring and also various games like giant dominoes.
Davis said that a large majority, about 85-90%, are Baylor-aged students. Accordingly, Freight has a system for people who need rides from the bar and will offer to pay for an Uber back for anyone who needs it.
“We just want to make sure that you guys are safe, having a good time, come back to see us, and the vibes are always high,” Davis said.
Austin sophomore and Zander Tracy said that going above and beyond for customers like this is uncommon, yet needed.
“I feel like companies don’t do stuff like that anymore,” Tracy said. “It is great that they do that, and honestly, it is something we should see more of. Too many companies do what they have to, and that’s about it.”
Freight is always looking to keep improving as a company and to try new things that can put them above the competition. For future plans, they hope to hear more from the customers about what their ideas are and what they would like to see in upcoming events.
“We are definitely open to expanding different themes,” Davis said. “If people have ideas and things they like, we’d love for them to reach out and let us know.”
However, Davis said that Freight trivia will always be consistent.
“We like sticking to Tuesdays to let people know, no matter what, if you come here on Tuesday at 7:30, you’re going to be doing some trivia,” Davis said.
