A man was arrested Monday evening after shots were reportedly fired near Baylor campus resulting in one possible victim.

Nathan Antonio Parham, 23, is in custody on charges of tampering with physical evidence, possession of controlled substances in a drug-free-zone, evading arrest on foot, unlawfully carrying a weapon and criminal trespassing. His total bail is set at $22,000.

Waco Police Department officers were alerted around 5:30 p.m. of gunfire near 12th Street toward the 1100 block. Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said police responded quickly and were on the scene shortly after calls about shots fired began to come in.

Around the same time, another individual called Waco PD dispatch and reported he was shot. When officers arrived, Swanton said a man fled from the scene and an officer pursued him on foot. While running, the man threw a pistol he was carrying near the 12th Street overpass. The pursuit ended quickly and Parham was arrested.

Swanton said witnesses at the scene reported seeing a black man attacked by several individuals. Officers understand this to be the only person shot and injured on the scene. However, as officers approached the victim, he ran toward Speight Avenue and jumped into a black vehicle where a driver was waiting. Officers did not pursue the vehicle. The victim has not checked into a hospital nor has he been verified as wounded, Swanton said.

Swanton said Baylor students were not involved in the shooting. He also said he urges any victim from Monday’s shooting to come forward.
