The ability to adapt to a changing environment is essential to survival. This principle is true in nature, the business world and in sports. In the age of national recruiting and high school power rankings, there is more pressure on 18-year-old kids to walk into a college gym in front of tens of thousands of fans and compete at a high level. Freshman center Isaiah Austin knows this first hand, and his journey has only just begun.

The Baylor Bears defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 80-60 on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center to move to 7-4 in the Big 12 Conference.

Baylor improved its overall record to 16-8.

With the win, Baylor is a legitimate contender to win the Big 12.

The Baylor Bears host the West Virginia Mountaineers at 8 p.m. today in the Ferrell Center. It’s a pivotal matchup for both teams as Baylor and West Virginia are neck and neck in Big 12 Conference standings.

After a lightning hot 5-1 start in conference, the Bears cooled off during a three-game losing streak. On Saturday, Baylor bounced back to end the losing streak by defeating Texas Tech.

Just over halfway into the Big 12 Conference basketball season, six teams are within three games of each other for the Big 12 regular season title.

The Kansas Jayhawks, the unanimous preseason choice to win the Big 12, have lost three consecutive games. Kansas’ shocking losing streak has created a logjam among the Big 12 standings.

After senior Brittney Griner was fouled in the second half making a move to the basket and fell, Baylor assistant coach Damion McKinney yelled, “Playin’ big girl basketball!”

And she was, leading her No. 1 Lady Bear team to an 85-51 win over No. 6 Kentucky in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic on Tuesday night.

Holding Lamar to only nine points in the second quarter, the defending champions, No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears won their first game of the season, 80-34, over the Lady Cardinals.

With a national championship last season, the No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears take the hardwood at noon today, defending both their title and the basket.
“They got everybody’s best shot last year because they were No. 1, and they were undefeated,” head coach Kim Mulkey said. “But now they’re going to get everyone’s best shot because they’re the defending national champions.”
