Softball thumps Panthers in first game of double header, 6-1

The February calendar ended in the first loss of the season for the Lady Bears, but as it turned to March, the team wasted no time getting back into the win column. In fact, they did it convincingly, beating Prairie View A&M 6-1 in the first of a double header on Tuesday afternoon.

For the tenth straight game, Baylor pitching held their opponent to one run or fewer, and has done so in all but three of their games thus far. It was sophomore Courtney Repka who continued the dominance on the hill allowing just one earned run through all seven innings. Repka improved to 6-0 on the season and added 9 more strikeouts to her total.

Freshman outfielder Chelsea Kovich went 3-for-4 in the game, scoring 2 runs and carded an RBI. Red shirt sophomore and star pitcher Whitney Canion served as the designated hitter, showing her talent extends beyond the mound and to the plate as well. She went 2-for-4 knocking in a run and scoring another.

The first and last runs of the game came on wild pitches, and saw green and gold uniforms crossing the plate. An RBI single by redshirt freshman Holly Holl after the first wild pitch put Baylor on top 2-0 at the end of the first inning. Kovich had an RBI bunt in the second; the third inning saw an RBI double from Canion and a sac fly from redshirt junior Meagan Weldon to make it a 5-0 lead.

In the top half of the fifth inning, Prairie View A&M scored its first run ever against the Lady Bears on an RBI by Leann Flores, scoring Artavi Woods, who lead off the inning with a triple.

In the sixth, Kovich continued her memorable day with a leadoff double. She then stole third base and eventually came around to score for the final run on the second wild pitch.
