After a weekend of competitive and mentally taxing tryouts in Portland, Ore., senior soccer player Carlie Davis was relieved to finally be landing in Dallas on the way back to her home at Baylor University.

As the plane taxied, Davis noticed a missed call from an unknown number on her phone and held the phone to her ear as the voicemail played.

On the other end of the phone was Cindy Parlow, former national-team player and head coach of Portland Thorns FC.

She was inviting Davis to join the team on March 11 for their first preseason practices.

“It took a while for our conversation to sink in, “ Davis said. “I guess it took me a while to actually let myself believe that it was actually happening. That I was actually getting a chance to play professionally.”

Portland Thorns FC is part of the newly formed National Women’s Soccer League.

The league has eight teams throughout the United States and is expected to open up play sometime this spring.

After the folding of Women’s Professional Soccer in 2012, the NWSL was created in its place in attempt to establish a long-lasting league.

The NWSL looks to expand to at least 10 teams across the nation in the future.

To prepare for preseason in March, Davis has decided to put her “classes on hold” to continue preparing for the physical demands playing at a professional level requires. The regular season will begin in April.

After a weekend on the field with high-caliber players, Davis realized she would be pushed to her limits physically and mentally playing at a professional level. She decided that she needed to dedicate herself entirely to this opportunity.

The tryout took place last Saturday and Sunday at JELD-WEN Field, home of MLS team the Portland Timbers. More than 80 women’s soccer players showed up to battle it out on the field in attempt to catch Parlow’s eye. The first day was spent playing a series of eight-on-eight games. The second day the players were able to showcase their skills in multiple games of 11-a-side.

“I was not only surprised by the numbers that we had at the first Thorns FC tryouts, but also by the quality,” Parlow said. “There were some quality players. So many, in fact, that it will be difficult for me to choose which ones to bring into our preseason training camp.”

Davis played left back for the entirety of the tryout and did enough to gain an invitation to the club’s preseason training camp starting on March 11.

While the invitation does not ensure a spot on the final roster, Davis said she was more than happy with having the chance to play in the presence of top women’s soccer players such as United States National Team forward Alex Morgan, and also push herself outside her comfort zone.

“I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t scared out of my mind,” Davis said. “This experience is challenging me like nothing I’ve ever experienced but it’s a chance for me to glorify God and keep playing soccer so I’ll take it.”

Davis was a major factor in Baylor soccer’s historical season this past fall.

Her speed and hard-nosed tackling led the team to a 19-1-5 record, the best in program history. Davis started all 25 games for the Bears.

The team is sad to say goodbye to Davis in such a hurry but is proud to have a member of their family representing them at a professional level.

“Carlie is the type of player you dread defending you in practice,” freshman forward Bri Campos said. “She was a key part of our success last season and it’s exciting for me as a younger player to see her succeed at the next level.”

The Baylor women’s soccer team saw its best season last fall with an overall record of 19-1-5 and made the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen game against the University of North Carolina.

Although the team experienced a devastating loss in penalty kicks to the Tar Heels, three senior stand-out players didn’t want their time on the field to end just yet.

Senior forward Lisa Sliwinski, senior midfielder Hanna Gilmore and senior defender Carlie Davis all made the decision to try and continue their soccer careers in the newly formed National Women’s Soccer League.

“I remember sitting on the bus after we lost to UNC and thinking to myself, ‘this can’t be it’,” Sliwinski said. “I was done playing for Baylor but I didn’t think my days playing soccer were over.”

After the demise of the Women’s Professional Soccer league in 2012, women soccer players in the United States lacked a place to play at the professional level for an entire year.

The NWSL was created in place of the WPS,= and will start play this spring with eight teams in the league.

Sliwinski described the timing of the new professional league’s creation as perfect.

She couldn’t play college soccer anymore, but she was still fit enough from last season to jump into an intense and competitive soccer environment right away.

Each of the eight teams are made up of players from the United States, Canada and Mexico’s national teams.

The college draft took place last Friday and added four more college players to each roster.

The rest of the spots will be made up of players picked up in team tryouts that will be held throughout the next two months.

Although Sliwinski, Gilmore, and Davis did not get picked up in Friday’s college draft, they are determined to continue their campaign to play professionally.

The trio plans to travel to Washington, D.C., this weekend to attend the open tryout of the Washington Spirit.

“It would have been awesome to get picked up in the college draft,” Gilmore said. “But I think this will be a great experience for us. I’ve never done anything like this, and I just feel blessed for the opportunity.”

As a part of head coach Marci Jobson’s first recruiting class at Baylor, the three are considered a major part of “building the dynasty” she envisioned when first taking the job.

Jobson said Sliwinski, Gilmore and Davis are prepared physically and their time at Baylor has prepared them mentally for the intensity and high competition they will be up against.

“You have to have a consistent practice,” Jobson said. “Those coaches may only be watching you for 10 minutes of the whole session. You have to be at the top of your game at all moments.”

Jobson also expressed her excitement for the future of the program and said this could be a turning point for Baylor soccer.

“We are now turning the corner to not only be a winning program on the field and in the classroom, but also a developmental program for kids who want to play professionally.”

Davis also thinks pursuing a professional career will benefit the program.

“In the future, girls are going to see Baylor as a place that can prepare them to play at the next level. It’s cool that we can set that precedent for the program,” Davis said.

Soccer can be relentless sometimes. A team can outplay its opponent all game, but one goal can change things dramatically. Such is the way it went for the No. 11 Baylor women’s soccer team against the No.13 University of North Carolina on Nov. 18 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Baylor jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but UNC was able to tie it up late in regulation, and take the win in penalty kicks.

The Bears fell to UNC last year by a score of 5-0, but if there is such thing as a dominant program in sports, it is Tar Heel women’s soccer. UNC has won 20 of 22 ACC Championships, and 20 of 28 National Championships.

But this shouldn’t detract from the season Baylor had.

The Bears finished the season with a regular season record of 19-1-5, the best record in Baylor soccer history.

“We played 25 games this year and I have absolutely no regrets about any of

them,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “I can look back as a coach and say we fought the good fight in every single game we played. We had a great year.”

Baylor also finished with a perfect record at home of 9-0-0, and the team outscored its opponents by an average of 1.76 goals per game.

It was this strong combination of offense and defense that helped the Bears win their first Big 12 Championship since 1998.

Baylor entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, but the Bears outscored their opponents 9-2 over the tournament’s three games to convincingly take home the Big 12 Championship.

With the end of the season comes the end of the seniors’ careers.

This senior class is responsible for much of the program’s growth, however.

It was only four years ago that Baylor soccer won eight games.

Senior forwards Lisa Sliwinski and Dana Larsen finished their careers fourth and fifth all-time on Baylor’s scoring list with 30 and 29 goals respectively.

Senior forward Hanna Gilmore is right behind them.

She has finished in the top three in scoring on Baylor’s team each of her four years.

Senior defender Carlie Davis has been an instrumental part of a Baylor defense that has never allowed more than .82 goals per game during her tenure.

Baylor has a talented group of underclassmen ready to step up next season.

Most of Baylor’s defense remains intact with juniors Kat Ludlow, Selby Polley and Taylor Heatherly returning.

The current freshman class has a lot of talent and received a good amount of playing time to help rest the starters throughout the season.

The freshman class is led by forward Bri Campos, who recorded three goals and four assists in her first year.

There will be a lot of offense to replace next season, but the combination of Campos, junior forward Alex Klein, and the rest of the Bears will be ready.

Baylor had 17 players score goals during the season, but only four goal-scorers were seniors.

A lot of the program’s growth has to do with Jobson’s impact on the program.

In 2006, the season before Jobson took over, the Bears finished just 3-7 in conference play and only managed one win away from their home field.

Baylor has not had a losing season in the past four seasons, and the team looks like it is ready for a period of sustained success.

Under Jobson, the team is 58-28-17, a far cry from the years of being in the conference basement.

The Baylor volleyball team’s season is officially over after a regular season in which the Bears earned 20 wins and just 12 losses.

This season is just the sixth time in program history that the Bears reached the 20-win mark.

It is the second time that the team has won at least 20 matches under head coach Jim Barnes.

The NCAA tournament selection show was this Sunday.

The Bears were considered a bubble team for the tournament and were not selected.

Junior outside hitter Zoe Adom led the Bears this season and was named to the All-Big 12 first-team. Adom was the main catalyst for the Bears on offense and had 199 kills in Big 12 play.

Adom had 13 matches in which she had double-digit kills. She ranked fifth in Big 12 play with 3.37 kills per set.

The Bears also had two players selected to the All-Big 12 second team in senior middle hitter Torri Campbell and senior right side hitter Alyssa Dibbern.

Campbell was second on the squad with 91 blocks, 0.95 blocks per game, and 20 service aces. In conference play, Campbell led the team with 13 aces.

Dibbern was the team’s season leader in points with 373, kills with 330, kills per set at 2.87.

Dibbern also led the team with 20 matches with at least double-digit kills.

Although the Bears goal was to get into the NCAA tournament, this was a positive season for the Baylor volleyball program.

Reaching the 20-win mark is an accomplishment and posting an 8-4 record at the Ferrell Center is also noteworthy.

“Everyone comes out and plays their hardest every day during practice and so it’s really fun,” sophomore outside hitter Tori Cox said. “Everyone is involved and it’s a team effort.”

With such a young squad filled with seven freshmen, the team will have more experience next season.

“All the girls have been working hard,” head coach Jim Barnes said. “The players on this team, the chemistry is tremendous. Like (sophomore outside hitter) Nicole Bardaji hasn’t played much but what she adds to the team is spirit. This is probably the most unselfish team I’ve coached and that’s why I’ve enjoyed this group so much.”

This 20-win season laid the foundation for even more future success among the volleyball team.

The No. 11 Baylor soccer team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with a 2-1 overtime victory over the No. 14 Georgetown Hoyas. Senior forward Dana Larsen notched the overtime golden goal to give Baylor the win. The Bears will now take on the winner of North Carolina and Illinois at 1 p.m. Sunday. If the No. 2 seed North Carolina was to win, then the Tar Heels would have home field advantage against Baylor.

Through the first half, the game was scoreless. Baylor did keep the offensive pressure high, however. The Bears recorded eight shots to Georgetown’s three.

In the second half, Georgetown struck first. Hoya sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz scored in the 82nd minute to give Georgetown the 1-0 advantage. Coming into the game, Corboz was the 10th best scorer in the country, so the Bears knew they had to keep her in check.

With just two minutes remaining, freshman forward Bri Campos evened the game at one. Campos had threatened goal earlier in the game, but finally found the back of the net for some late-game heroics.

In overtime, Baylor took advantage of an early opportunity. Senior forward Larissa Campos found her fellow senior forward Larsen for the game winning goal just two minutes into overtime. Larsen leads the Bears in scoring on the year, and this game-winner is her 11th goal of the year.

After defeating Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the No. 3 seed Baylor women’s soccer team will take on the Georgetown Hoyas at 3 p.m. today at Fetzer Field at the University of North Carolina, the host school for the region.

Baylor is currently ranked No. 11 in the country, just three spots ahead of the 14th-ranked Hoyas. Georgetown earned a spot in this game by defeating Virginia Tech 3-2 in overtime.

“At this point, there are only really great teams left in the tournament,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “They have a stellar defense, a very good offense, and they have an outstanding center midfielder. It’s going to be a tough, tight game. I think we’re going to have to play lights-out in a lot of ways.”

The strong offense that Jobson is referring to is led by Hoya sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz. Corboz is the 10th best scorer in the nation. She has 17 goals and eight assists in Georgetown’s 22 games.

Jobson said that her team will not change what they have been doing for the game.

Instead, the Bears will stay with the game plan that helped earn them an 18-1-4 record this season.

“We have to execute our game plan,” Jobson said. “Any team that’s left at this point has a good defense and offense, so we’re just going to have to be ourselves and play like we’ve played all year, and I think things will end up good.”

Last year, Baylor lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to North Carolina.

If the Bears beat Georgetown, not only will they surpass last year’s mark, but they will also likely get a rematch with the North Carolina Tar Heels.

While the team is not looking past the Hoyas, they are handling the nerves of postseason play well.

“I think we’re just so excited to have this extended time together that we’re just looking to each game as a next obstacle to conquer with each other,” junior defender Kat Ludlow said. “Nobody is really full of nerves. We’re just excited to have one more game and one more chance to play.”

This Baylor team has two of the school’s best goal scorers in its history.

Senior forwards Dana Larsen and Lisa Sliwinski are both in the top five for goals scored, and both players have produced this year.

Larsen leads the team with 10 goals and nine assists, but Sliwinski is right behind her with nine goals and four assists.

Offense can come from a number of players, however.

This Baylor team has 13 players that have each recorded multiple goals on the year.

According to senior defender Carlie Davis, the key for this team is focus.

“We need to not get caught up in everything that’s going on,” Davis said. “We just need to keep focusing on what we’ve been focusing all year, which is preparing the right way, recovering our bodies the right way, coming out with the exact same mentality every single game and controlling what we can control. If we do that, then I think we’ll be fine.”

When TCU and Baylor last squared off in volleyball, it took a grueling five sets to narrowly decide a Baylor victory. This time in Fort Worth for the rematch between the two schools, Baylor decisively took care of business to earn a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-21). The win gave the Bears back-to-back road sweeps after they defeated West Virginia in straight sets last Saturday.

The first set went back and forth with the teams tied at 10-10. Then Baylor senior middle hitter Torri Campbell went to the service line and earned four consecutive points for the bears. Both teams struggled with service receive in the first set, but Baylor earned 4.5 team blocks and limited TCU to only a .158 hitting percentage.

With senior setter Kate Harris’ serving and passing, the Bears started to assert themselves. Campbell and junior outside hitter Zoe Adom carried the Bears offensively down the stretch to lead the Bears to a 25-21 win in the first set.

The second set played out in competitive fashion. The Bears started to dominate the action at the net and Campbell and sophomore middle hitter Adri Nora were just too much for the Horned Frogs.

Behind a display of offensive skills from senior outside hitter Alyssa Dibbern, Adom, Campbell and Nora, the Bears won the second set 25-20. With the Bears eyeing road sweep in Big 12 play, the match went into the third set and the Bears picked up right where they left off from the first and second sets. Baylor jumped out to a quick 4-2 in part because of TCU’s mistakes and Nora’s offense.

The Horned Frogs showed their resilience and tied the third set at 4-4.

The Bears struggled some in service receive as TCU placed the ball well on their serves to take a 6-4 lead.

True freshman outside hitter Thea Munch-Soegaar also added a spark to the Bears with her serving and with her offense. TCU struggled to find open court with the Bears strong defensive play and dominating net presence. With their backs up against the wall and facing the threat of a sweep on its home court, TCU battled to take a healthy 12-8 lead. With Campbell’s serving, Baylor jumped right back into the game and only trailed by one point at 12-11. TCU led 14-11 until Adri Nora had a thundering kill.

TCU made some defensive adjustments and started rotating their middle hitter back behind the center line to counter Baylor’s offense.

The strategy worked and TCU held on with a 17-15 lead. Baylor led 19-18 after play from freshman libero Hope Ogden and Soegaard. With Baylor leading 20-18, TCU felt the pressure from Baylor and called timeout.

Campbell and Soegaard continued to contribute offensively and Baylor took a 21-19 lead.

Zoe Adom had 10 kills for the Bears and really stung TCU with her powerful, across-the-court kills.

Adom had an impressive kill to give the Bears a 23-21 lead. Behind the serving of Harris, Baylor gained another point to get to 24.

Then Torri Campbell sealed the deal with another kill to give Baylor the win and back to back road sweeps in Big 12 play.

The Bears swept West Virginia 3-0 on Saturday and on Wednesday night, swept TCU 3-0.

Baylor’s next match is at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Iowa State at the Ferrell Center.

Last year, the Baylor women’s soccer team ended its season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the hands of North Carolina 5-0. This year, the 11th ranked Bears have advanced to the second round after beating Arizona State 3-1 on Friday.

Senior midfielder Hanna Gilmore scored her fourth goal in three games to begin the Bears’ tournament opener. Senior forward Lisa Sliwinski assisted on the play.

“Hanna had a great game again,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “She has really just come into her own at the right time. She is playing the best soccer of her life. Her leadership on and off the field has been incredible.”

Senior forward Larissa Campos assisted on a goal by junior forward Alex Klein that put the Bears up 2-0 going into halftime.

In the second half, Arizona State scored early to make the game interesting, but the Bears responded less than a minute later. Junior defender Taylor Heatherly lined up to take a free kick from 42 yards out. She launched the ball into the middle of a crowd of players, and it ended up in the back of the net. The goal was Heatherly’s first of her college career.

“It was a cool response,” Jobson said. “I was disappointed that we gave up the goal, but I thought our response was excellent. We didn’t sit back and we continued to press forward. It was great for Taylor to get that goal.”

Baylor’s opponent for its second-round game will be Georgetown. Georgetown scored early in its first round game against Virginia Tech, on Sunday but the Hoakies took a 2-1 lead into halftime. The Hoyas equalized, and the game went into overtime.

Georgetown wasted no time, however, and scored less than four minutes into the first overtime period.

The Hoyas are now 16-3-3 on the year and are ranked No. 14 in the country.

The teams will play at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Friday. UNC is the host school for Baylor’s game against Georgetown, UNC’s game against Illinois, and the game in which the winners play each other for a spot in the Elite Eight.

Both Baylor and Georgetown are offensively strong. Each team scores just over two goals per game, but Baylor takes about twice as many shots.

The two teams are similar defensively as well. Baylor has given up 12 goals in its 23 games this season, and Georgetown has given up 15 goals in its 22 games so far. It should also be noted that Baylor has a higher RPI, which means that it played a tougher schedule than Georgetown.

Georgetown’s leading scorer is sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz. Despite being just 5-feet 2-inches tall, Corboz is what makes this offense go. She has recorded 17 goals and eight assists in Georgetown’s 22 games. She has also taken 90 shots, which is almost twice as many as Georgetown’s next leading scorer, junior forward Kaitlin Brenn.

Kickoff against Georgetown will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Fetzer Field.

After a long regular season and a win in the Big 12 Tournament, the No. 11 Baylor women’s soccer team has advanced to the NCAA tournament.

The Bears are a No. 3 seed in the big dance and will travel to Arizona State to take on the Sun Devils today at 8 p.m.

Though the Bears have a 17-1-4 record, they will not host any games during the tournament because of what is being called an “administrative error.”

“We’re not sent on the road because of some disrespect,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “It was just an honest mistake with the Baylor administration.”

Though Baylor is the higher seed, Arizona State has a good team.

The Sun Devils finished the season 10-8-2 after playing a difficult Pac 12 schedule, and they are currently riding a four-game winning streak.

“They a good team,” Jobson said. “Obviously they’ve played in a very competitive conference, so they have faced great teams…It’s nothing we haven’t faced up to this point, but they do have some very good pieces we are going to have to take care of.”

Baylor advanced to the second round of the tournament last year but fell to North Carolina.

UNC is the top seed in the Bears’ region this year, but the team has more experience in dealing with high stakes.

“A lot of us…don’t really have last year in our minds,” senior forward Larissa Campos said. “This is a completely new season, a completely new year. We have new goals. We’re just taking it one game at a time. We’re not even looking past Arizona State because they’re ultimately all we have right now. It could be our last game.”

One concern for Baylor is the fatigue after the Big 12 Tournament. The Bears traveled to San Antonio and played three games in five days, and that can be very taxing on even the most fit players.

“There definitely was fatigue,” senior forward Dana Larsen said. “We had to go deep into our lineup, and that was great. It got to show our depth, and those girls did great.”

On the field, the Sun Devils like to possess the ball. Baylor has played many teams that play this way, but Arizona State has not seen a team that forces the issue like Baylor does.

“We’ll have to come out strong and ready, but I think they’ll be a little bit blindsided by our man-marking system because I don’t think anybody in their conference marks the way we do,” Campos said. “As long as we play with the grit and the edge that we always play with, we should do well with them.”

Offensively, Baylor is averaging more than 22 shots per game and allowing just fewer than seven shots per game. Arizona State, however, recorded 17.1 shots per game while giving up nearly 14. Baylor also has an advantage in goal differential.

The Bears are winning by an average margin of victory of 1.86 goals, while Arizona State is winning by an average margin of victory of 0.1 goals.

The Baylor volleyball team fell to the Oklahoma Sooners 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25) Wednesday night. Baylor had four players with double-digit kills in redshirt junior outside hitter Zoe Adom, freshman outside hitter Thea Munch-Soegaard, sophomore middle hitter Adri Nora and senior right side hitter Alyssa Dibbern.

The Bears started off the first set with a 6-0 run. Baylor maintained its opening momentum and led 17-12. Oklahoma recovered to eventually tie the match at 19-19. The Bears were down 19-20 when Dibbern earned a kill to tie the game. Oklahoma suddenly found its stroke and pulled ahead to win the first set by four points, 21-25.

In the second set, Baylor fell behind with a five point deficit, which forced head coach Jim Barnes to call a timeout. The Bears fought back and tied the match at 15 all. Starting with the 15-15 tie, the second set would go on to have seven more tie scores as Oklahoma and Baylor traded points. With the set tied at 23-23, Baylor overtook Oklahoma and held on to win the match 25-23.

The Bears trailed for most of the third set and at one point were losing by 10 points, 9-19. Baylor won the next consecutive 11 points behind senior setter Kate Harris’ serving and took a 20-19 lead. Oklahoma would go on to win the next four points and take a 20-23 lead. The Sooners were won the third set 23-25 despite Baylor’s amazing 11 point run.

The fourth set saw the Bears jump out to an early 8-4 lead behind kills from Adom and Nora. Much like in the first set, Oklahoma once again fought back to the score at nine all. From there the Sooners got into a groove and took a commanding five point lead, 14-19. Adom crushed the volleyball for a crucial kill that sparked a Baylor comeback. The Bears tied the match at 22-22. In almost an identical scenario to the second set, Oklahoma would go on to win the fourth set 23-25 to defeat Baylor 3-1.

Serving problems were the main reason behind the Bears coming up short on Wednesday night.

“The team is fighting,” Barnes said. “They are giving all they can and we’re trying to give them the parts of the game that they need to focus on to give us the edge. Every timeout was ‘Guys, we’ve got to get on the service line and serve tough because we can’t get them out of their offense.’ For some reason, tonight we just did not serve tough.”

Harris was responsible for spurring the Bears 11 point run behind her serves, but this was a tough loss for the Baylor senior and captain setter.

“This was definitely a heartbreaker,” Harris said. “We were right there. I mean we were within two points for both sets and this is a tough loss for us.”

Next, the Bears take on the West Virginia Mountaineers at noon on Saturday in Morgantown.

“It was a tough one,” Nora said. “Our serving was a little off. We kind of served easy balls, but me personally, this is kind of like fire in the belly basically because this just makes me more angry and ready for West Virginia.”
