Soccer wins Big 12 Championship

Baylor won its first Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship in a 4-1 victory over TCU on Sunday.

The second-seeded Bears (17-1-4) have earned the Big 12’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Larsen scored five points in the three-match Big 12 tournament at Blossom Soccer Stadium. She passedit to defender Selby Polley in the 19th minute for a clear shot from about 25 yards that went past TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold. It was the first goal in regulation play that Arnold had let get past her this week.

And when Gilmore kicked in Larsen’s try on the rebound in the 52nd minute, the Bears were up 2-0.

The eighth-seeded Horned Frogs cut it to a one-goal game when Monica Alvarado’s pass from right of the box cleared the goal mouth and was headed in from about eight yards out by Lindsy Schafer in the 74th minute.

Gilmore scored again in the 80th minute, and Bri Campos added another one less than a minute later.

In addition their first Big 12 soccer championship, the Bears actually were making their first appearance in the final match since the tournament started in 1996.
